Trevor Abrahmsohn: My radical solution to ending bad buyer behaviour
Any ‘instant contract’ system will still be riddled with legal exits large enough to drive a removal lorry through - there is a much better solution available, says veteran agent.
Trevor Abrahmsohn is the founder of Glentree International, which has become the benchmark for boutique estate agencies in North West London. Since 1976, Glentree has handled some of the capital’s most important residential landmark properties, often breaking world records for the sale of trophy properties in London. Having floated the company on the Stock Market to great acclaim, where the shares rose 2,800% in just six months to a market cap exceeding £200 million, Glentree PLC quickly became known as the forerunner of modern estate agency, or, as contented clients like to put it, the “Goldman Sachs” of the residential property world, where the only objective is to win, with dignity and panache. A consummate dealmaker and an unapologetic perfectionist, Trevor has sold homes to the great and the good. Indeed his ‘Rolodex’ of international clients would not disgrace the Forbes Rich List. Over the years, he has proudly hosted Lady Thatcher in his home, while President Gorbachev was the illustrious guest of honour at a glittering gathering of the cognoscenti celebrating Glentree’s near half-century of trading excellence. His USP is the closing of deals using ‘strategic meetings’ of the clients, which is closer to a summit between warring nations than anything else! Judicious and subliminal altering of the client’s mental software helps to ‘get them out of their own way’ enabling his audacious deals to be consummated. Regarded by his peers as an éminence grise of the industry, Trevor is one of the most distinctive voices of the residential property market. He co-founded Fabric Magazine and PrimeLocation.com, and was the founder of the major digital property portal OnTheMarket.com, originally an estate agents’ collective and which was recently sold to CoStar, a multi-billion dollar US- based portal, for £100 million. South African by birth, but an incorrigible Anglophile, Trevor lives with his wife Lisa, of 46 years, and their two dogs in their residence overlooking Hampstead Heath. His elder daughter, Lauren, runs Glentree’s New Homes Division, while his younger daughter, Olivia, is a food technologist. When not closing a deal or offering a forthright opinion on the state of the market, he can be found at his Palm Beach retreat, perhaps on the golf course, where his handicap is, by his own admission, “generous”, or tending to his beloved classic car collection which he confides is an extension of his family. His default thinking is simple: “I love my fellow man” - a good prerequisite, he believes, for a people-focused industry. Trevor proudly concedes that he takes a cavalier approach to the “little rules”, but he studiously worships at the altar of the “big ones” , those of probity, decency and honour!
