Where is the ‘most desirable’ place to live in England?

Still a small town in the Wirral, apparently

The Centre for Economics and Business Research has picked out a small enclave called Bebington in the Wirral as being the “most desirable” place to live in England – for the second year running.

The economists were commissioned by the Royal Mail to take a measured look at “desirability”, breaking down what’s usually a subjective thing into a measurable one by analysing schools, access to green spaces, employment prospects, working hours, affordable housing and average commuting times.

Using the 2011 Census, DCLG’s Indices of Multiple Deprivation, the General Land Use database and the ONS archives, the researchers decided that Bebington’s residents continue to enjoy the ideal balance of living close to work, having access to good schools and high employment rates.
Norwich came in at number two after Ipswich slipped down five places to seventh position. The inclusion of Partridge country doubled the south’s showing in the top ten from three to six in the space of a year. Strong performances from local schools and lower unemployment were credited.

Three-quarters of the most desirable places in Scotland are around Glasgow, but Edinburgh postcodes are nowhere to be seen thanks to the city’s dire housing affordability. Wales saw a notable increase in the number of locations making the list around Cardiff.

Steve Rooney, Head of Royal Mail’s Address Management Unit: “Royal Mail delivers to nearly 30 million addresses across the UK, connecting communities and businesses. This new report builds on the study that we commissioned two years ago and provides unique insight into the most desirable places to live and work, through the lens of the postcode.”
