Wanda may have walked away from a luxury resi play in London recently, but it’s full steam ahead for the Chinese mega-developer Down Under.
The firm’s Sydney-based division has unveiled a punchy new 190-unit project that’s being positioned alongside international benchmark schemes including New York’s One Hundred East Fifty Third and One57; London’s One Hyde Park and Chelsea Barracks; Hong Kong’s Opus and 39 Conduit Road; and Singapore’s The Marq and Le Nouvel Ardmore.
Promising to “transform the city’s skyline”, the “iconic” PTW-designed One Circular Quay will comprise a 59-storey resi tower next to a 28-storey five-star 181-key Wanda Vista Hotel, with a new 5,576 square foot public plaza at ground-level for some high-end retail and public art.
The residences – which are being billed as “the most luxurious apartments ever [to be] offered in Sydney” – will have views across the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge and beyond from their prime harbourside spot, with the structure’s sandstone and glass façade echoed in a rather tasty-sounding interior palette of “champagne, chocolates and creams…with accents of gold, bronze, marble and finely crafted timbers”.
Sydney-based practice PTW is taking the lead as Executive Architect, with Kerry Hill Architects in charge of the resi element, and Crone Architects working with Kengo Kuma & Associates on the offices.
Construction began in March and completion is due in mid-2022. CBRE has been instructed as global selling agent for the resi units, which are officially launching this month with “oversized” two-bed priced from AUD$5.5m (c. £3.3m), and three-beds asking AUS$10m (c. £6m) plus.
Wanda Group is rolling out a raft of luxury mixed-use developments internationally; schemes are currently on the go in London (One Nine Elms), Beverly Hills (One Beverly Hills), Chicago (Vista Tower), Istanbul (Wanda Vista Istanbul), and over on Australia’s Gold Coast (The Jewel Residences).
John Wei, Managing Director, Wanda One Sydney: “Sydney is one of the world’s most vibrant and dynamic cities. The development of One Circular Quay and the Wanda Vista Hotel will add an exciting new landmark to Sydney. We are very proud to be delivering this destination address to Sydney and to be contributing to the wider regeneration of Circular Quay and the local community.”
Michael Purefoy, Global Head of Sales & Marketing, Wanda International Projects: “In the past few years, Wanda has acquired a unique portfolio of development projects in some of the world’s most desirable addresses. Thames riverside in London, the heart of Beverly Hills, absolute beachfront on the Gold Coast, and the heart of downtown Chicago. But in such a unique, instantly recognisable location with one of the most iconic views in the world, One Circular Quay stands out.
“The elegant, glass facade of the tower, allowing residents light-filled interiors and sweeping views across the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, together with the timelessly elegant interiors using the finest materials and specifications, combine to deliver 190 truly unique residences.”
Madelaine Lundgren, Director of Sales & Marketing, Wanda One Sydney: “Understanding our customer and their lifestyle requirements, is our primary focus. The design is not only beautiful, but also works to enhance the living environment and maximise the incomparable views. We are extremely excited to be bringing a world-class standard of residential living to this iconic and globally recognisable location.”
Kerry Hill AO, Founder, Kerry Hill Architects: “The design reflects the rarity and exclusivity of the offering of the most desirable luxury residential location in Sydney. One Circular Quay is located at the forefront of one of the world’s most recognised harbours. The site has access to unparalleled views of Circular Quay and Sydney Harbour and the building turns its broad face towards the northeast to maximise the iconic views.”
Greg Crone, Chairman and CEO, Crone Architects and Kengo Kuma, Kengo Kuma Architects Associates: “Circular Quay is well known on the Global stage as the gateway to Sydney with the Opera House, the Bridge, and the Harbour. The Wanda Group understands the importance of Circular Quay for Sydney through its heritage from early settlement to the Global City it now represents.
“They carry the vision and the capacity to contribute and share with Sydney the transformation of Circular Quay into the future. Wanda values, and is committed to, global design excellence, embracing environmental sustainability and working closely with the City of Sydney, the many stakeholders, and its architects to deliver premium residences and a Wanda Vista 5 star Hotel integrating a new public domain as a major contribution to Circular Quay. Well done to Wanda for their wisdom and vision to create such an important project for Sydney.”
